Sutton

Debris and dust settle slowly around us. I can’t see, my face buried in Beau’s chest. I can only smell a clean scent and traces of warm leather from his jacket. I’m on top of him. His arms lock around me so tightly, he’s more secure than a seatbelt.

“Are you okay?” Panic laces his question. “The baby?”

“I’m fine. We’re fine.” Thanks to you taking the brunt of our fall.

The sky is still above us, the moon offering a little light. We didn’t fall too far down. It isn’t a sinkhole, but a collapsed tunnel. We broke an old mining vent boarded up by rotting wood and a thin layer of dirt and weeds. No one would have known it was there.

But since Uncle Redd has warned me about walking around up here, I’m sure I’ll get an earful. Although I don’t think Beau would want me to say anything to him and that makes me a little uncomfortable.

What am I doing? I thought Beau was trouble. Maybe I’m actually the one who’s looking for trouble.

Beau grunts as he sits us up. “Are you really okay?”

I move off of him. “Maybe little bruised. But I don’t think I’m bleeding.”

I shine the flashlight over my body, getting a quick confirmation, and then over his.

The beam catches on a rusty dot as he moves to stand.

“Holy shit! There’s a nail in your arm,” I squeak with wide eyes.

He lifts his leather covered arm. “I’ll be damned. There is!”

I barely manage to keep my pickles down as I watch him pull the jutting metal from his arm but he doesn’t so much as make a sound.

“It’s okay, Sutton. Leather jacket has my back. Didn’t even scratch me.”

Why am I so relieved at his safety? And why am I not freaked the fuck out by the lack of my own?

It’s like I feel…

Don’t even think it.

You can’t be safe with a man who isn’t honest with you. You’ve proven that over and over.

“I can boost you out of here,” he says as we get to our feet.

“What about you?” I glance at the jagged walls that seem to want to grab a person.

He looks down the tunnel rather than to the starlit sky. “I’ve got work to do.”

The temperature of my blood rises faster than any boiling point possible. “Work?! Are you kidding me! You could be killed. Hell, we almost died!”

I’m as scared and angry as when I found out I was pregnant. And I’m truly afraid that under the rage and fear are the all-too-fresh emotions and feelings that it grows from.

My chest starts to roll quickly, and it seems like the air is thick.

“Hey, it was just a little fall. Hon—” he stops himself from calling me a special name. One I crave more than air. “Sutton, I’ll be fine.”

Little does he know saying my name only spurs me on. I want to hear it for more than just this moment. I’ve screwed this up again. I’ve taken something that was simple and complicated it.
